Tents

We have a tent in our living room. And it’s great having kids because we totally have an excuse for having a tent in the living room. “Oh, Jacob likes to play in it,” we say. And he does, no lie. Jacob likes to “go crazy” in the tent. He runs into any one of the walls and lets the elastic walls spring him back to the center of the tent and down on to the Thermarest padded floor. He does this over and over again with riotous laughter until he has worked himself up into a manic state of crazy. But that’s not the whole story. We also really like it. It’s like a little sanctuary, a private space, a little bit of security in a big world. It’s great to nap in. Great to play in with the kids. It’s good to lounge in while watching TV. Stephanie likes it. I dig a girl who likes a tent in the living room. And we have a pretty solid track record of great tent sex. I’m not sure what it is. I remember the first time I took Stephanie camping. Wow. I think that is what hooked her on camping. I mean, she is pretty much a city girl, but she loves camping. Yeah, I’m pretty good at camping.

Speaking of tents, we also got the screen room (a large tent with mostly mesh walls) set up outside. I put it up this past week, and I can tell we are going to really enjoy that. On Tuesday evening, Stephanie and I retreated to the screen room while reading, talking and enjoying the weather and the refuge from mosquitoes. This picture was taken about ten p.m.

Still speaking of tents, I finally received my new backpacking tent in the mail recently. Of course the first thing I did was set it up in the living room. It’s gonna be great. For a one man backpacker, it has plenty of room. For me, one of the best parts of hiking for four days will be sleeping in a tent alone for four nights. I’ll pack a book (chosen both for it’s weight as well as it’s literary content) and enjoy lazing in my bag in my tent. Getting that tent in the mail re-energizes my hiking plans. Now that school and all of my real responsibilities are truly over, I’ll be making some serious steps toward that big walk.

I’m glad to report that Jimjam is getting settled nicely in her room. She doesn’t live in a tent, but dang if her room isn’t just as cozy. Last Saturday, she and Steph went to town and did a little bit of shopping for her room. Turquoise curtains, purple bedspread and pillows, purple rug. And then we remembered that a couple of Christmases ago, we bought four boxes of white decorative lights only to discover that one of the boxes was actually purple lights instead of white. I set them aside and forgot about them. Until now. Now JimJam has purple dangling lights in her room to complete the ensemble. In her words, “It’s tight.”

Mother’s day was good for Stephanie. Mother’s day last year, she was the mother of one. This time around, of three. And she is a wonderful mother. It’s a joy for me to see how much it has meant to her to have JimJam with us. Stephanie loves to take care of those whom she loves.
