Ketchum Rocks

Saturday was a good day. Stephanie and I had spent the previous few days talking, thinking, considering, praying and debating about what to do about a house. When we had finally reached the point where everything blurred together and nothing made sense, and we couldn’t figure out if we were making any progress at all, Stephanie suggested we stop thinking about it for a while go on an outing.

It was a gorgeous day, so we drove the hour to Central where there are some unusual rock outcroppings in the hills outside of town there. Stephanie and I and the boys had come here with the students from school last August. On that occasion, the boys were too scared to climb or stray beyond arms length from mom.

This time, however, Jacob the Independent took off as soon as he climbed out of the car. He was immediately scrabbling up the most challenging inclines. I really had to hustle to stay right behind him. It’s amazing to see how capable and self assured he is, even out there.

I followed him as he plunged into heavily wooded areas and forged his way though dense brush. Though I didn’t dare lag behind, I thought several times that if I did stop and let him go ahead alone, he wouldn’t alter is course one degree. He’d just go on this own. It’s remarkable.

And Toby has no sense whatever of the danger he’s in climbing rocks outdoors. He got pretty banged up, but I’ll write more about that later. But both boys are clearly very comfortable out doors. Jacob is a little too comfortable peeing outside. Like a scrappy little dog, he’ll pee wherever and whenever the urge strikes him. They are Alaska boys.

From there, we stopped at the Roadhouse in Central for burgers all around. Jamiee invited a couple of her friends to come along, and they all road in the bed of the truck, allowing us a leisurely drive home and the time to talk about everything in life but the house. It was a good day.

for a minute i thought this might be a reference to Dave "Greatness" Ketchum, who by the way is engaged in Peacemaking efforts in Cambodia and has been for the past year or so.
