Skinned Toby

Fearless has the positive connotation of bravery or courage in the face of a known danger. Fearless does not describe Tobias. He lacks a healthy sense of fear.

On Friday, Tobias was playing on the couch when he fell off and hit something. We still don’t know what, but he emerged with a fat and bleeding bottom lip. He must have bit it or hit it on something because he got whacked pretty good.

On Saturday, when we went to climb around Ketchum Rocks, all Tobias wanted to do was to run down the slope and then take a big jump at that last moment, heedless of the twenty foot drop on the other side. It was everything we could do to corral him to keep him from doing that very thing. We finally found a spot where the ground sloped gently for about ten feet before reach a saddle, or a low spot before the grade rose again. With no chance of falling to his death, I finally let go of his hand and said, “Okay Toby, take off!” He took about two bounding steps, tripped, and landed on an exposed section of rock, skinning his right cheek and nose. Tears and snot mixed with blood and got all over my shirt front.

On Sunday, Stephanie was outside with the boys as they played on the swings. Though I was inside, I could hear the shrieking cries through the open window. I came rushing outside and Stephanie was coming in, holding Tobias. His left check was covered with dirt and blood. His mouth, agape with cries, was full of dirt too. Poor guy. I helped rinse the dirt out of his mouth first before addressing the rest of his wounds. Now he has a skinned left side to match his skinned right side and his fat lip. Poor Toby.

Good thing you had a believable explanation for all that blood, otherwise someone might think that was a case of child abuse. Grin!!!
